CHAPTER SEVEN

HOW LONG COULD she give him the cold shoulder?

Three days and counting.

The stubborn woman had lied about torturing him. Two people could be professional and nice without flirting.

She could look at him every now and then, for crying out loud.

As the day wound down Wyatt stepped into Exam Two to find his three favorite senior sisters sitting, standing, and taking up most of the space in the room built for three or four max—making it five with Imogen and himself added to the mix.

As always, they were nicely dressed, and each had freshly laminated, helmet-like grandma hair and red lipstick. They might look enough alike to pass for triplets but there was at least nine months and a couple of days between each of them. They did everything together—including doctors’ visits, as much as he’d tried to dissuade them the first couple months he’d seen them. They’d have abided by his request if he was as scary to the patients as Imogen claimed he was.

As she took vitals, Imogen laughed at a story the three of them told, half the time in unison. Some tale about the brazen hussy involved in a love triangle at their seniors group and the scandal that had erupted at their regular weekly trip to the local music hall. Silly for that to annoy him. Imogen did what he told her to do—made the patients like her. But did she have to laugh with them and enjoy it so much?

Not one of the four women had looked at him since he’d stepped in, but they genuinely liked Imogen. Granted, they were exactly what he expected Amanda to be like in fifty years—friendly to a fault. But you could be friendly without being affectionate. They loved her. And she liked them too, he could see it in her smile—but that had been before she’d looked at him and it had vanished.

“Misses Arminda, Estaleenie, and Genoie.” Imogen even said the names right, despite the spelling being off in the same way the spelling of his last name differed from the way it was said in the area. A situation he’d thrust Imogen into when he’d started calling her Emma-Jean.

“Afternoon, ladies. Who wants to go first?” He stepped in but leaned to one side so Imogen could get past him in her flight from the room. She brushed against him, unable to help it, and he caught a breeze of the fruity perfume she wore. Sweet, but with a bit of tartness to it. Fitting. And distracting.

She stopped at the doorway, making room but standing by in case she was needed.

No one volunteered, so he just took them in order, asking the usual questions and performing cursory checks. He made notes as he went, becoming more irritated with the fact they’d stopped chatting.

Imogen couldn’t be right about them being scared of him. But maybe she was right about them not really liking him. Damn. Did she have to be right about stuff that annoyed him?
